LoggerHeadTM

Adjustable Cheek Piece Hardware   by KMW

100% Made In U.S.A.

I am not a fan of adjustable features on “working” rifles due to the increased opportunity for parts failure or operator misuse.  However the modern evolution of optics and night vision has pushed the visual axis higher and higher above the bore.  To maintain proper shooting position and comfort for extended periods of deployment more and more S.W.S. are being fielded with higher combs and adjustable cheek pieces.

The LoggerHeadTM Adjustable Cheek Piece is designed to address some shortcomings of the currently offered designs as well as offer some welcome new features.  First and foremost, my intent was to design a system that is tough enough to be used and trusted on Law Enforcement and military rifle applications.

The LoggerHeadTM ACP hardware is primarily designed to work with the excellent McMillan Fiberglass Stocks and Manners Composite Stocks that are molded with separate integral adjustable cheek piece.  It can also be custom installed in properly made synthetic and wood laminate stocks available from other manufacturers.  I am not currently offering a version to work with the “saddle” type cheek pieces as I feel that they are inferior to the “integral cheek piece” versions due to forcing your face laterally away from the optical axis regardless of the vertical height adjustment used.

LoggerHeadTM ACP will not loosen from recoil, transport or wear.  The vertical position can be “set” for the individual operator’s comb height preference which is repeatable when removing and re-attaching the cheek piece during cleaning or maintenance chores.  Likewise the user’s individual horizontal/lateral settings are repeatable on this hardware.

The LoggerHead ACP hardware is made up of a lower assembly and an upper assembly.

LOWER ASSEMBLY SHOWN IN HOST STOCK

The lower assembly is permanently installed into the host stock. It features a unique clamp assembly that is activated with a single crossbolt.  This locking crossbolt is designed to be flush with the surface of the stock and is reversible from side to side at the operators discretion.

The locking bolt has a 3/16" Hex drive head that is common on many other S.W.S. stock guard screws.

*1/4-28 x 1.25"  T-30 Plus drive bolt can be substituted for commonality on rifles with Badger Ordnance bottom metal.

UPPER ASSEMBLY SHOWN IN HOST CHEEK PIECE

The upper assembly is installed into an inletted area in the bottom of the cheek piece.  This assembly consists of two columns extending from a base plate.

The front column features 10 grooves spaced 0.080" apart.  Each groove is capable of retaining an E-clip to act as a vertical stop for the operator to set their preferred height.

TO REMOVE OR ADJUST CHEEK PIECE

The cheek piece of the stock can be removed or adjusted by first loosening the clamp bolt.  Using a 3/16" Hex driver, turn the bolt approximately 1/4 to 1/2 turn counter-clockwise to release the tension of the lower assembly clamp.

DO NOT TIGHTEN THE CLAMP WHILE THE CHEEK PIECE IS REMOVED FROM THE STOCK.  DOING SO MAY DAMAGE THE CLAMP!

The vertical setting can be adjusted by inserting the E-clip into the appropriate groove that best suits your needs.

When the user is ready to replace the cheek piece, align the columns with the clamp holes and drop into place.  The height will be preset by the E-clip position.  Make sure the E-clip stop is in full contact with the top surface of the clamp.

Once the cheek piece is fully in place, the clamp bolt can be tensioned by turning the bolt in a clock-wise rotation until snug.

Current hardware design allows for a lateral (left and right) adjustment of the cheek piece.  While it is recommended that all L.E. type duty rifles retain a centered position for the cheek piece, certain competition shooters may want to adjust this feature.

The two columns are threaded into a backplate in the upper assembly.  Each column is equipped with a 3/16" HEX drive in the bottom.

On most installs, there are two access holes visible in the bottom of the stock between the toe and grip.

These two holes allow access to the column drives.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ADJUST THIS FEATURE WITH THE CLAMP TENSIONED!  DOING SO COULD DAMAGE BOTH THE CLAMP AND THE COLUMNS!

With the clamp crossbolt loosened, the columns can be unlocked to allow lateral repositioning of the cheekpiece.  This is best done with the cheekpiece in place on the stock but with the clamp unlocked.

As shown in the photo at right, use your hand to hold the cheek piece down while moving horizontally to your preferred position.  Once in position, firmly tighten both columns to lock the setting.  This setting is retained when the cheek piece is removed and replaced during normal maintenance and cleaning.

The LoggerHead clamp can now be tightened to lock the cheek piece into your pre-set shooting position.

FEATURES

  • Alloy and steel construction.

  • Upper assembly inlets into cheekpiece for low visual signature

  • Lower assembly inlets higher into host stock allowing for stronger installation.

  • No need to countersink the bottom assembly as in older designs.

  • Drain holes in stock and floating clamp system.

  • E-clip vertical stop is easy to adjust but stays put until moved by the operator.

  • L.E. model offers flush locking bolt design that cannot snag on obstacles or brush during movement.

  • Target model offers knurled locking bolt design that precludes the use of tools to unlock the clamp.

  • Reversible clamp bolts on both L.E. and Target models.

  • 3/16” Hex wrench fittings on L.E. locking bolt and Target horizontal adjustments.

BENEFITS

  • Materials offer maximum durability and corrosion resistance.

  • Clamp system does not damage upper assembly columns and yet offers a full vertical inch and 320 degrees of grip.  Will not shoot loose or lose adjustment during movement and transport.

  • Longer and stronger vertical adjustment than in conventional designs.

  • User’s vertical and horizontal* settings are retained during removal and re-installation of the cheek piece.

*Horizontal adjustment feature is available on the target model only.

  • Fewer cuts in stock exterior give improved defense against dirt and foreign debris.

  • Fewer cuts in stock exterior offers improved cosmetics.

  • Water cannot collect around lower assembly.  Complete system can be hosed or blown out while in the field.

  • Locking bolt can be configured for either left hand or right hand operators.

The LoggerHead A.C.P. hardware is guaranteed for the operational life of your stock.  Guaranteed not to shoot or shake loose when used according to instructions.
